Aviapolis is the hub between east and west

Helsinki-Vantaa international airport is the heart of Aviapolis- a new international business city growing around the airport. Helsinki-Vantaa airport has 12 million passengers annually. It has won several global no 1. prizes for its excellence in passenger services. Easy access to Helsinki which is just 15 kilometers away has been made easy with an exceptional taxi service concept.

An ideal location full of possibilities

Aviapolis, which is an area of 42 km2, provides EU's fastest direct flight connections to the Far East markets through Helsinki-Vantaa airport. The airport offers already more direct route flight connections than Oslo or Stockholm. A rapidly increasing number of passengers travelling from Asia to Europe indicates even more growth in the future with new aircrafts by Finnair. The is still space in the northern sky.

Aviapolis is conveniently located at the crossroads of all intermodal traffic forms. E18 road links the area to Turku and its harbour in the other end as well as to St. Petersburg in Russia in the other end. The main roads leading to north and south are assessible from the airport. The new international harbour in Vuosaari, Helsinki will further put the area in the middle of Helsinki region when opening in 2008. Further improvements are underway when the Marja-rata line connecting airport with downtown Helsinki by train will be completed in 2013.

Connections and accessibility are vital

The Aviapolis area has been carefully planned by City of Vantaa to incorporate companies with different profiles into the area. By nature international flight couriers have their business concentrating around the airport. A wide range of logistics companies have found their home in Aviapolis. Not to mention the growing number of internationally operating leaders in hi-tech sports equipment such as Suunto and Polar Electro. The trend is towards brands concentrating their brand leadership with sales and marketing functions in Aviapolis. More names such as BMW, Nike, Electrolux are already in the area.

Finavia offers its passengers - airlines, the defence forces, the business community and Finnish society as a whole - a high standard of safe, internationally competitive airport and air navigation services.

There are 24 airports in addition to the main Helsinki-Vantaa Airport belonging to the network maintained by Finavia - a network that links all the country's primary economic areas with the capital and at the same time acts as a portal to and from the rest of the world.

For several years, surveys have shown that passengers are pleased with the high standard of Finnish airports. International studies of passenger satisfaction have placed Helsinki-Vantaa Airport among the world's cream for its size for many years running.

Helsinki-Vantaa: A Gateway to Asia

Finavia's aviation services and infrastructure provide an essential springboard for Finnish companies to succeed in international competition. Smoothly functioning air services allow us to cut the distances between Finland and the rest of the world.

Our position along the direct flight routes between Europe and the growth centres of Asia has made Helsinki-Vantaa an important gateway. There are 40 flights a week from Helsinki-Vantaa to nine destinations in the world's fastest growing market of Asia.

In the face of increasing transit traffic, Finavia will expand Helsinki-Vantaa Airport extensively in the next few years. We are expanding the services around the airport to serve better the trade and industry as well as passengers. A significant terminal extension to the international terminal will be built, with Hotel Hilton and WTC buildings, just a stones- throw away from the terminal.

The Finnair Cargo Helsinki terminal is part of the Nordic logistics chain between Asia, Europe and North America. The hub of Finnair Cargo is based at Helsinki- Vantaa airport where in our use we have one of the largest terminals in Scandinavia. In this terminal 125 000 tons of freight is handled annually.

Our mission is to provide air freight, terminal and cargo handling services in a customer-oriented, competitive and profitable manner. Air freight services are mainly produced via Finnair's scheduled flight network which is complemented with leased capacity from pure freighter operators such as Cargolux.
Finnair is set for a massive boost to the fast growing Asian market with significant increases in traffic to India and China. In response to strong demand, the number of weekly flights to India will increase from the current three to 12, while there will also be an increase in flights to China.

In June, Finnair will launch a new Indian route with flights to Mumbai, which will be served non'stop from Helsinki five days a week. Moreover, in mid-May the current three-weekly frequency for flights to the Indian capital Delhi will be increased to daily. Following these renewals, Finnair will fly to all long-haul destinations non'stop, without stopovers, bringing more alternatives for Finnair customers.

Due to this expansion and growth in Asia we are also evaluating the possibility to extend our terminal capacity by building a brand new facility to Helsinki-Vantaa airport to enhance the Helsinki Gateway concept. Finnair Cargo's vision is to be the most desired air freight operator in the Northern Europe and especially concentrate on the Gateway traffic between Europe and Asia.

FOCUS will be a business park of international level, situated in the Northern part of the Helsinki-Vantaa airport and along the coming Kehä IV (Ring road). Spread over 10 square kilometres, FOCUS will offer great business opportunities and will generate thousands of workplaces. The new Kehä IV, which will be built between Tuusulanväylä and Kulomäentie, will facilitate the realisation of disparate business concepts for production and retail. A key success factor will be the synergy between various activities.

Space and opportunities for all needs

Focus offers spaces for the most demanding activities: logistics, machinery, exhibitions and specialized shops. The area of Jussla, developed along the east side of Tuusulanväylä, is already now an important logistic centre. Furthermore, Focus will supplement the Vantaa Aviapolis area.

Focus – a centre for logistics

Helsinki metropolitan area is expanding beyond the Helsinki Vantaa airport area. Industrial, logistic and commercial activities are looking for new spaces. Several changes are going on: the air traffic growth is accelerating, the E 18 highway creates links both to Stockholm and to St. Petersburg, while Tuusulanväylä connects to Helsinki and to Tallin.

A new logistic gravity centre

The logistic structure of Helsinki is changing thanks also to Vuosaari harbour. The new harbour will start its activity in 2008, and will open up new opportunities for increased competitiveness in logistics. The future Ring IV and the region of the Helsinki-Vantaa airport will therefore gain importance from a logistic and industrial perspective.

Focus – let’s build together

Focus is being planned and developed by the municipality of Tuusula. Professionals will then create business operating environment and internal synergies. Property developers, investors and entrepreneurs who might to contribute to the area global concept are welcome to join already during the planning phase. The timeframe for the realisation of Focus is 10-20 years.

Kehä IV – the artery of Focus

Focus will become a major occupational area developed along the future Kehä IV, the regional transversal connection that will connect three highways: Lahti, Tuusula and Hämeenlinna. A ring connection between the highways of Lahti and Tuusula already exists, as well as a juncture to the highway of Hämeenlinna. In the future a new connecting ring is fundamental.

Focus – in the planning

The plan for the Kehä IV region is one of the main objectives of Helsinki Metropolitan Area vision for transversal public transports foreseen for 2030. Its development is planned for the period 2005-2010. The main stakeholders (the municipality of Tuusula, the airport region, Vuosaari harbour, the city of Vantaa, the Aviation authority etc.) have already agreed to cooperate. There is room for plenty of opportunities. Now it is time to act!
